Abstract

In this era of changing lifestyles and physical inactivity, mental stress and irregular daily habits, physical and mental health is very much under pressure. This is why, in order to be healthy, mind-body physical activities like Yoga and Tai Chi have been promoted. Yoga is an Indian practice based on Indian culture while Tai Chi is Chinese based. All work under a similar framework of bodily interaction, breathing, concentration and mental control but both are different from each other in terms of their methods, their history, or the methods of practice. We aim to investigate the effects of Tai Chi and Yoga on the human body in the present research paper. The study looks at fitness, balance, flexibility, muscular strength, cardio respiratory fitness, mental health, stress, quality of life and mind-body coordination. Based on the systematic reviews as well as meta-analyses we can see that both are beneficial for physical and mental health. Tai Chi is about balance, body control and dynamic movements of light to moderate intensity while Yoga is about yoga in its various ways (Asanas, Pranayama, Breathing Control) and meditation and relaxation. However, in the case of studying the effects of the two it is important to look at the way in which the two were practiced, how long did each take and which age and health status of the participants were at that time.
